🌞 nice outside. Last day for #NPSF #NP_IND plank challenge, @Strava climbing challenge. Time to run & plank hills!
@ChrisAldrich Thank you! It was harder than I expected, and a good personal development challenge. Now considering renewing for another 100 days, or perhaps just continuing to do it by default (not part of a project) and picking a different #100dayproject.
100 Days of IndieWeb still seems intimidating (despite my contributing almost daily to IndieWeb), so I may pick one of these:

Great #microformats & #indieweb support!
rel=me h-feed Micropub WebSub etc.
Micro.blog is using Micropub as their standard modern posting API:
* http://help.micro.blog/2017/api-posting/
For publishing, in addition to RSS & JSON, micro.blog publishes rich structured feeds with microformats2!
* http://help.micro.blog/2017/api-feeds/
As well as subscribes to your own personal site feed(s) using WebSub! (which I’m doing with micro.blog/t)
Last but not least, instead of proprietary "verified" mechanisms, micro.blog is exclusively using the very well established rel=me microformat for website verification:
* http://help.micro.blog/2017/web-site-verification/
micro.blog, at early rollout time to Kickstarter backers, is already one of the most (if not the most) indieweb friendly services out there.
Well done Manton!

Great time @IndieWebCamp Nürnberg a year ago.

Yesterday #100DoPP d86:
One fewer plastic cup. Inspired by @katherine. I tried getting my usual iced coffee drink at my local cafe in a glass jar I brought with me and it worked and tasted fine. No straw needed, no spilling.
For years I cannot help but think of the impacts of every single purchase I make, from where do the materials come from (petroleum for plastics), to where do the materials end up (the North Pacific Gyre).
Habits are hard to break. Personal change is often slow. Slow incremental change is still worth it, and better than being discouraged by being overwhelmed by not being able to do it all at once, or the magnitudes at work. Every step counts. I have to thank the examples set by friends that demonstrate it can be done.
My friend @katherine has been using re-usable containers for years and is closest to zero waste of all the friends I know. I have made small changes along the way, washing and re-using plastic food containers from my market.
At first the deli workers at my market were surprised and noted they had not seen anyone else do that before. Eventually they stopped being surprised and just accepted it (or at least me doing it) as normal. Repeatedly doing the right thing can change minds.
Even if the actual physical impact of such actions is small, the act itself, taken publicly, communicates much more. Assumptions are questioned, ideas are planted, take root, and grow into more actions. The cycle repeats.
I want to believe that even with everything happening today, there is room for small daily positive acts, and that long term the hope they embody will propagate and endure.

Congratulations to @aaronpk on completing #100DaysOfIndieWeb and #100daysofmusic! Incredible dedication.
Focusing on completing anything every day for 100 days in a row (even just 100 days of positive posts!) is challenging and a useful way to uncover what are the things you do to procastinate a commitment to yourself, even a small commitment.
But Aaron went much farther than that, with 100 original music pieces, and 100 quite interesting contributions to the IndieWeb, including work on his own site & tools, and on other sites & tools.

#100DoPP d69 Wednesday,
36:07 #NPSF PR day, 1:31 slower than Feb.
Pushed hard, but didn’t beat myself up.
Without a buff, at 52°F, I consciously paced my breath to warm myself up. Was still tired from the start, likely from only 4hrs of sleep.
Took off my hat and long sleeve sport shirt after the first lap and ran back out in a short sleeve shirt and shorts.
Almost gave up twice, after laps 2 and 3, but after the burpees sets, I had caught enough of my breath to keep going. Plus big thanks to Katy Kunkle for joining me on my last lap and helping push to the finish.
I did feel distinctly stronger on the uphills though, and that felt good. Next, I need to return better rested.
Last month:

#100DoPP d68 Tuesday,
I switched mobile photo posting from @Instagram to @SwarmApp:
1. higher-res JPGs
2. POSSEing higher res also
3. Publish more photos to my site (than is typical on Instagram, which has a culture of encouraging maybe 1-2 photos a day at most)
I have been using Instagram as a mobile photo posting client because of its convenient iOS native application UI, and then manually creating photo posts on my site after the fact, which are then automatically syndicated (POSSEd) to Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter.
This past Sunday the Instagram app kept crashing (iPod 6 touch 128GB, latest iOS10.2.x) when I tried to post a handful of photos as a multi-photo post.
This repeated Instagram app crashing (like five times in a row when I went to "Share") was sufficiently frustrating that I started considering other options. When I looked into the photos I privately posted to Swarm, I noticed that they were of much higher resolution! (like landscape 1920px width instead of Instagram’s 1080, or 750 for multi-photos!).
I tested embedding the Swarm images on two recent photos I had used Instagram to originally post on Sunday of ferns unfurling and dew-drop laden plants in Golden Gate Park:
* http://tantek.com/2017/085/t1/spirals-ferns
* http://tantek.com/2017/085/t2/droplets-leaf-tips-plants
Worked great and the extra resolution was simply gorgeous.
Two challenges however: I did not want to make every viewer of photos on my website have to download the larger higher-resolution photo, and I did not want to link to my Swarm posts, as it seemed wrong to link from a photo post to a checkin post as a syndicated copy.
So I solved both challenges with one solution, which was to first embed/show a 960px width image (default for Swarm/Foursquare permalink web view) on my photo posts, and then hyperlink it to the higher resolution 1920px version so it would both be easily discoverable, and so I could mark it up with the 'u-photo' microformats class so that’s the version Brid.gy would use to syndicate copies for me.
Here’s an example photo I posted that Tuesday night, also from that Sunday run in Golden Gate Park, to try it out:
* http://tantek.com/2017/087/t2/orange-curls-flower
Worked great, and I really liked the fact that if you click on the photo you now get a higher resolution version, instead of being directed to a silo post (Instagram).
I’ll still post some of these photos to Instagram, but now when I do so I can post them with a copy of the caption from the Twitter copy, which includes a permashortlink back to the original on my own website! And then I’ll just add a "View on Instagram" syndicated copy link along with the other POSSE destinations displayed in the lower-right of my posts (see the orange-curls-flower link above for an example).
(Aside: Instagram doesn’t auto-link URLs though, which provides additional motivation to keep URLs shorter, cleaner, and easy to type.)
I have more thoughts about my photo posting workflow as it were (e.g. checking-in whenever I take a photo, but not uploading the photo til later), but I’m going to stick with this change and iterate as needed for a week before writing that up more definitively.

Last photo is of a single-vendor "gettag" code abandoned years ago, no “free application” to download, unresponsive .mobi” domain name. The domain name can be fixed/reregistered, but the closed source “native” app is lost, long obsoleted by mobile OS updates. Abject lessons in the fragility of single-vendor standards (compared to multi-vendor interop), and the ephemerality of native mobile “apps” (compared to repairable/relaunchable *websites*).

(Thoughts and reactions during the sixth of seven 10 minute guided meditations in yoga teacher training 2017-03-12 (tantek.com/2017/072/t1/ytt-pranayama-bhandas-philosophy), written down in the five minutes immediately after the meditation.)
#100DoPP d52: 43/200h (21%+) YTT done!
Learned & practiced Pranayama, Bhandas, more leading, meditations (specifically meditations from chakras).
The chakras meditations in particular were the last thing we did today (Sunday), during which I had a bit of a “Doctor Strange” skeptic moment …
“I don’t believe in fairy tales about chakras, or energy, or the power of belief.” https://youtu.be/Lt-U_t2pUHI?t=55s (time index 55s)
… both when we started learning about chakras, and during the seven 10 minute guided meditations on each in particular.
As a scientist, I treat all such systems as mysticism, more stories and art than reality.
I tried to keep an open mind in two ways:
1. The benefits of meditation (as have been scientifically studied)
2. To learn and appreciate such mystic systems/beliefs as aspects of a culture (anthropology), rather than reality or models of the natural world to be subjected to critical inquiry (science)
After each 10 minute guided meditation, we took five minutes to journal our notes on each experience. I had a different reaction to each one.
But by the fifth in particular I had a feeling of having had enough, of such mysticism, mythology, that they were unnecessary, that I could not relate to them, and just wanted to reject it all.
During the sixth meditation, I was able to turn that emotional reaction of rejection into a more directed confrontation of questions and challenges.
Our teacher had been asking us to share our thoughts and reactions, and I said this one meditation in particular had made me think of many questions. I asked if I should share them. He invited me to do so. So I read them out loud: tantek.com/2017/072/t2/stories-truth-art-questions.

Of all the Tanteks I know, runner Tantek is the most vulnerable & insecure.
After six+ years of running, several times a week nearly every week, he still reacts with fear every time I wake him up to run. Every time I have to walk him through a regular morning routine, small steps, to convince him that it’s worth at least waking up and considering going for a run before anything else.
Put on your running glasses instead of your normal glasses. Brush your teeth and take some vitamins. Go to the bathroom if you have to.
Check the weather, how cold is it? Put on clothes that you can run in. It’s ok to add one more layer than you think you need.
Of all the mornings, Tuesday track is when he is the most resistant. He still responds with extra fear of injury, from when I pushed him too hard at the end of a track workout two days after he PRd in a half marathon.
This is typical of our regular dialog:
It’s late now anyway, why bother going?
It’s ok, you can go and even just do one lap and maybe abs exercises after. You like that part, it’s (kinda) social.
People will judge me for being late.
No. Maybe a few might make small jabs but only as an encouragement, because they feel close enough to do so. If it helps, consider those who aren’t even there, much less awake. At least you showed up!
But it’s been weeks (months?) since I’ve gone.
It doesn’t matter, just run a few laps like when you first went to track. It’s getting lighter outside, come on let’s at least catch the sunrise. Ok.
It’s too cold, I can’t breathe up this hill.
Put the buff over your mouth.
My ears are cold.
Put the buff over your ears too.
I can’t see, my glasses are fogging up.
You know every crack in the sidewalk, run lightly with your forefeet and feel the ground beneath them with each step.
Why do I have to go to the bathroom again right when I get to the track?
Just go and get it done.
The workout is almost over, what’s the point?
Just go run an easy lap and see how it feels.
That was hard and slow, why am I bothering?
Take a minute to stretch your calves and hamstrings.
Here comes everyone for the photo, but I only ran one lap.
Just put your arms around your friends’s shoulders as they are to you and try to smile a little.
Why are abs difficult? I haven’t even worked out really yet.
Just keep breathing consciously and do as many as you can.
My hands are cold again.
Put your gloves back on and run another lap.
That felt faster.
Good! Now stop and stretch for another minute.
Ok I’m ready for another lap.
Good, take it up a notch.
This feels better, but everyone is passing me, and why is that guy walking in lane 2?
Never mind him, he’s got something else going on, go around him in lane 3.
Everyone is so much faster, look at that pack of three that just passed me running in tight formation in lane one, how are they doing that?
Right, watch their form, now let your legs stretch out more like that and pick up the pace. See what you can do on this back straight.
They’re not pulling away!
Look straight ahead (not at them!) and kick harder!
[Update: photo of this moment: http://tantek.com/2017/067/t1]
I’m gaining, but I can barely breathe fast enough!
Keep going, at least until the turn!
I can’t do this!
You ARE doing this!
[Update: 0:43 200m PR https://www.strava.com/activities/891049966/segments/21700440693]
I’m running out of breath!
Take it down a notch and finish out the lap.
I want to walk the last 100.
Don’t stop! Just push whatever you’ve got left to the finish!
My lungs are burning!
Close your eyes and just push!
I finished the lap and can't breathe!
[Update: 1:35 400m PR https://www.strava.com/activities/891049966/segments/21700440706]
Walk it out! Slow your exhale. Inhale, exhale slower. Inhale, exhale even slower. Walk to the drinking fountain. Inhale, take a drink. Keep slowing your breath.
I think I’m done.
Try stretching for another minute.
Just one more lap.
See what you can do on this first 200. Now walk for a bit. Just one more 200 back to the start. Now keep running up and out of the stadium.
Those steps up to the stadium exit weren’t that bad!
Good! You’re done, jog back to get a coffee (you earned it) and head home to stretch.

@rachelandrew @marcosc:
1 varies greatly by airport
2 use clean/encrypted laptop+mobile
3 shutdown before deplaning
4 job: web standards
5 purpose: business meetings
I did all this (and a few more things) for recent trip to Berlin for @W3CAB meetings, fortunately no problems with re-entry at SFO CBP.
Actually observed the opposite (including watching 100s who went before me), looked very much the same as before the election.
More on 1 varies greatly by airport:
Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Detained because of name: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/muhammad-alis-son-illegally-detained-at-fort-lauderdale-hollywood-international-airport-attorney-says-9164544
Houston: Natural born US citizen NASA engineer detained (likely because of name) until he provided device passwords: http://gizmodo.com/border-agent-demands-nasa-scientist-unlock-phone-before-1792275942
Los Angeles (LAX): Detained more than 24 hours without adequate food, water, or legal counsel: http://www.dailynews.com/government-and-politics/20170207/la-council-members-hear-of-horrendous-conditions-for-detainees-at-lax

New York (JFK): Software engineer asked CS questions http://www.recode.net/2017/2/28/14764064/nigerian-software-engineer-detained-by-us-customs
New York/Newark (EWR): Software engineer asked CS questions http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/travellers-stories/aussies-weird-immigration-interview-in-the-us/news-story/8222c65d2f12e6691ef27c9b1753e821 (as you @marcosc pointed out)
This should be a list on Wikipedia or something.
More on 2:
If you’re using a mac, install File Vault on a clean laptop, have your home IT department hold onto the recovery pw, not you.
If you're using an iPhone (or just get a burner iPod6 already), enter a key code from first setting it up.
On any device you bring on international travel:
* Only install apps you absolutely need for the trip (e.g. No Facebook app, use site instead if you must)
* Evaluate what minimum set of site logins you need to use for the trip
* Use Authenticator for all 2FA, no insecure SMS nonsense
* Leave a list of those sites and apps at home
* Change their passwords before entering them on such devices
* If your device(s) are ever "inspected", politely do not provide any passwords (5th Amendment), and change all passwords on those sites & apps when you return home
In addition:
* Bring a small notepad (fits in pocket) and pen.
* Bring pre-wrapped (not fresh) emergency food like clif bars, and a water bottle you fill-up before boarding (or on the plane at the latest) because see LAX above.
* Bring enough warm clothes for a cold room
* Make physical notes of what questions you were asked
* Report any unusual border behavior publicly
More on 3:
Shutdown your devices before you get off a plane. There have been instances of CBP agents checking ID at deplaning gate! (JFK again)
http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/02/23/custom-agents-check-sf-nyc-passengers-ids-at-arrival-gate/
Not a reach to go from questions to detainment for any random erroneous reason.
More on 4:
What is your occupation (or job)?
Web Standards (because yes both of you do this)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_standards looks pretty good and easy to go from there to referencing specs etc. that have your name on it.
More on 5:
What is/was the purpose of your trip/visit?
Business Meetings - because that’s the closest general category that web standards meetings fit into. You’re not going to be a "speaker" or to do "work". If you’re going for an actual larger organized conference (e.g. one you have said publicly you are going to), then say so: Business Conference.
Of course none of this is "legal" advice, IANAL etc. You may want to bring a hardcopy of your (corp) lawyer’s phone number and pre-establish (before travel) both check-in and failsafe protocols (what they must do if you don’t checkin by a particular datetime). Also a sharpie for writing said number up your sleeve etc. before deplaning.
Mostly reporting what I practice, and have talked with other peers about. Hope that helps.
